PUBLISHING
Publishers, are you ready to ROR? Crossref will soon support author affiliations by incorporating Research Organization Registry (ROR) identifiers into its metadata scheme. This is a promising step, as the fidelity of organizational metadata for publications can be poor.
The theme for this year’s Open Access Week from October 19 – 25 is “Open with Purpose: Taking Action to Build Structural Equity and Inclusion.”
Wiley has released its earnings report for the quarter ending July 31, 2020. Year-on-year, revenue for the quarter went up by 2%, whilst adjusted earnings per share went up by 124%. The earnings growth is driven by revenue growth and expense management, with open access growth in the double digits. The Directory of Open Access Journals continues to see an uptick in applications. They have received more applications in 2020 so far than for the entire year 2017 (which saw a record number of journals added).
RESEARCH
An ethical framework for global vaccine allocation. This comment in Science discusses how an ethical distribution of a COVID could be approached. It advocates a phased approach, starting with a distribution concept guided by the standard expected years of life lost that are averted per dose of vaccine.
